Balancing Rock

Balancing Rock Wines is a new brand on the Granite Belt but not a new vineyard.

Purchase of the property at Wyberba by David and Lori Broadbent in 2016 led to the brand Balancing Rock. The property they purchased had been known as Preston Peak. Preston Peak has a reputation for the quality of it’s fruit, many years ago the wines were made by Phillippa. I can still remember a shiraz Phillippa made that was awarded Queensland’s top red wine, not certain of the vintage but I think it was 1995. Not long after sampling Phillippa’s excellent wines I was horrified to discover that a Toowoomba orthodontist had purchased the vineyard, promptly closed the local cellar door and opened one up in Toowoomba. Perhaps a good move for Toowoomba but not for visitors to the Granite Belt. So I was quite excited to hear about the sale of the vineyard to David and Lori in 2016, it’s been a long time between drinks!

The Balancing Rock wines were all made by Mike Hayes who, at the time, was the head wine maker for Symphony Hill. The wines were made at the Symphony Hill facility as Balancing Rock doesn’t currently include a winery. Recently Mike Hayes accepted a contract with Sirromet Wines which is exclusive so he can no longer make wines for anyone else. Mike is a very good wine maker who in 2017 was awarded Australian Winemaker of The Year by the Australian Society of Viticulture & Oenology. I’ll report here as soon as I know who the new Balancing Rock wine maker is.

David and Lori are very enthusiastic about the Granite Belt region, I’m sure they will be great custodians of this special vineyard. The Balancing Rock vineyard is, to my knowledge, the only vineyard in Queensland that has some Sagrantino in the ground and it’s been there for awhile as Peter Stark ex Boireann made a 2010 Sagrantino using fruit from these vines. The variety comes from Montefalco in Italy and is known for it’s tannins.

David and Lori have a very good 2015 Sagrantino, I have a few but I’m not going near them for a few more years as well made ‘Saggy’ does need some sleeping time.
