Robert Channon Wines began when Robert and Peggy Channon purchased approximately 20 acres in 1998 along Amiens Road at Bradley Lane and with subsequent planting of a vineyard. The cellar door opened in 2001.“Robert and Peggy

Peggy is an ex teacher and Robert practised in law. The winery’s reputation was enhanced by a circumstantial decision to plant Verdelho. Robert Channon Wines was praised in 2009 by James Halliday as arguably Australia’s foremost producer of Verdelho. The winery has also won awards for Chardonnay. This is one of the few local wineries that use fully-enclosed permanent netting over their vineyards, it’s expensive but loss of fruit to birds and hail is more costly. Currently the vineyard consists of Verdelho, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Robert and Peggy are music lovers at heart and stage regular jazz and classical concerts throughout the year on the property in Swigmore Hall. Having decided to make the big tree change decision from living in Brisbane to establishing a vineyard and winery and living on the property on The Granite Belt It’s a fair bet that both Robert and Peggy are committed and genuinely enthusiastic about their wines and The Granite Belt in general. You are guaranteed to be greeted by and experience this great love of wine and regionality at their cellar door. One of the things I have come to really appreciate about The Granite Belt is that you can be greeted by the owners at the cellar door and taste wines with them. All the wines are made using Estate fruit although there was one recent first ever exception – a 2021 Durif. Recently a Sparkling Verdelho was made and it disappeared into consumers cellars with lightning alacrity. So popular was this wine that another has been made for the 2021 vintage and it looks like it may become permanent in the range.

Since 2014 the wines have been made in house by Paola Cabezas Bono. Paola is a very talented wine maker originally from Argentina. I first encountered wines made by Paola at Summit Estate, where she pioneered many of the blends, I particularly remember a 2008 wine made with Monastrell, Garnacha, Shyra, Tempranillo, Cabernet and Tannat. Since then I’ve thought of Paola as The Mistress of Blends but of course she makes many wine styles with equal talent.

I’ve enjoyed many lunches at The Singing Lake Café which is currently being used for wine tasting and musical events while awaiting a new chef. Paola, the surrounds of The Singing Lake Café and a cosy fireplace in the cellar door are shown below.
