Ridgemill Estate 2017 Riesling

Sold out now, current release is the 2018. A few years back I was very surprised when Peter McGlashan presented me with a Granite Belt riesling to try at the cellar door – it was the 2016 vintage. This was the first Granite Belt riesling I had ever encountered, but why not there are some 2017 rieslingsimilarities between The Granite Belt and The Clare Valley. As a consumer, when it comes to white wine I hang my hat on riesling and it has to be dry.

A lovely straw colour and a somewhat subdued bouquet initially. When the aromas open they are fresh limes and lemons and some stone fruits including a slight pithy fragrance. The palate shows lime juice, again some stone fruit pith, and a later complexing of lime and grapefruit the result of which is similar to very ripe, or brown, lime. There is a clean backbone of acid and some minerals and stones. This isn’t Clare Valley Polish Hill River but it’s easy and great drinking. So another variety covered by The Granite Belt at Ridgemill Estate. Not looking great for a a Ridgemill 2021 riesling as the block was hit by frost, unsure there may be some but in very reduced volume. The current release 2018 is an off dry style.
