4382 Terroir 2021 Durif

I believe this wine, like it’s predecessor contains a small percentage of black muscat – and apparently (as I’ve been informed by Rob Davidson since) that belief is entirely erroneous! I caught up with Rob Davidson, briefly, on Thursday 27th June this year. Rob says that almost all of his white fruit is now local GI and the red, some of which is now local fruit, will be mainly local soon. I can’t wait to sample some of the red wines made with his actual 4382 grapes – Rob has put a lot of varieties in the ground in the Rees Road Vineyard.Durif

A combination of red merging into black in the glass, glowing at the meniscus and still radiant in the centre. A big and boisterous bouquet which you could almost bite invades your nasal sensors with dark plums, wafts of very ripe strawberries, black raisins, oak with a very slight hint of smoke and a promise of spice.

Luscious dark plums, rich dark chocolate and fruit cake present themselves with some extravagance on the front and middle palate, there is also just a little lick of liquorice, some tantalising spice, black pepper and cloves, arouses further palatal interest. Fruit, acid and oak are well integrated and the wine is ripe but not over ripe.

One thing to note about this wine is that the label reads 14% alcohol but the a/v is more than that. The wine holds the alcohol well but it is more likely to be 15% or slightly more which is OK because a variance of plus or minus 1.5% is allowed. So this is a bigger wine than you may at first realise, enjoy it on that basis, it certainly will complement hearty winter food with great vinous alacrity!
