4382 Terroir 2020 Saperavi

Lightly oaked in the Andy Williams style to allow the fruit to express it’s magic. As you might expect from a good Saperavi the wine contains deep inky depths with an exceptionally glowing meniscus that reflects bright red, purple and some pinkish hues.

Sweetly aromatic with some deeper compote fruit notes the scents foretell a wine that should deliver a mouthful of flavours that are almost edible. There is some background vanilla oak and a little spice.

A palatal surge of purple fruits – mulberries and plums are enthusiastic to greet you with a luscious, mouth coating almost, but not quite, fleshy effect. The notion here is a lurking thickness which cannot express as the acid lifts and drives the fruit, the energetic flavoursome features of the wine are apparent. Red cherries and a little maraschino are now welcomed by the purple fruits as sweet and savoury seek a resolution that is also occupied by a little clove/cardamon spice and black kalamata olives with some aniseed. The tannins are fine indeed, perfectly extracted with weight to match the fruit and provide an ending palatal elongation that you just have to enjoy.

This is a well balanced Saperavi, it introduces the possibility of sweet but without going there as the suggestion, once noticed, begins to head immediately toward savoury. The fruit is ripe but the wine isn’t thick but powerfully elegant, the tannins seem somewhat nonchalant at first but slowly gather you up in a gently building pucker.

We just had to match this lovely Saperavi with slow cooked organic Osso Buco from where else (?) yep you guess Stanthorpe’s own Boss Meats. Life is full of ups and downs, this one is an upper!.
