Casley Mount Hutton 2010 Verdelho

Aged Verdelho, something not commonly encountered as the usual notion of Verdelho is drink now or soon. I did try a 7 year old Verdelho a few years back and it had held up well, that one was sealed under screwcap and this one is under Diam.

As the pic shows, the wine has developed quite a bit of colour and looks similar to what you’d expect from many 9 year old rieslings, so no evidence of any oxidation from the colour. Diam seals have a perfect track record in my cellar and looks like it continues here – not a plug for diam as I still prefer screwcaps. The bouquet holds a lot of interest as the wine begins to open up, there are citrus, tropical fruits and even some banana scents. The palate still has enough acid to drive the wine to some length, both lemons and limes combine with tropical fruits a talc like mineral aspect kicks in and the wine finishes fresh and drying. The fruit has significant power for an aged Verdelho, I would have liked to have also tried this wine as a youngster. It’s a ripper of a Verdelho which probably won’t surprise anyone familiar with Granite Belt Verdelho’s. I have given the wine a short drinking window below, it will cellar beyond that under optimum conditions but it’s unlikely to undergo further improvement.
