Casley Mount Hutton Winery 2018 Pinot Noir

Another surprise packet to join the Ridgemill Estate 2018 Pinot Noir – yes a really good pinot from The Granite Belt. This could be but I doubt it’s estate fruit – Grant or Sonya can fill us in. The Ridgemill Estate Pinot Noir fruit was from a very good local grower so I’m curious about this one.

The colours in the glass slide through a radiant spectrum from darker cherry to a glowing rose pink.2018 pinot noir Aromas of red fruits are the initial offering which gently transforms into some spice a little forest floor and then a noticeable later, and quite exciting, presentation which contains a slight piquancy in combination with pungency.

This lighter bodied wine is a delight to consume in our current weather and accompanied a roast organic chicken which produced a partnership sure to attract any self respecting sybarite. A very delicious gathering of red cherries and raspberries leads into a little earthy/forest floor with some rather elusive spice. Next comes some genuine magic as that piquant redolence noted on the bouquet expresses itself as some quite sour fruit flavours, which initially uses a take no prisoners approach but eventually you are caught as this flavoursome medley subdues your palate into unrelenting hedonistic submission, I found this aspect irresistible.

The palatal feel is smooth as the wine travels along your palate with ease that can only come from great balance. I first tasted this pinot at Casley Mt Hutton Cellar Door in January 2020, it has developed a lot more complexity since that initial sip. I doubt this wine is a long term cellaring proposition and can’t see it gaining further complexity beyond 2023, so open and enjoy now.

So congratulations to both Grant Casley and Peter McGlashan for demonstrating that you can make really good Pinot on The Granite Belt.
