Héritage Estate 2020 Sagrantino

Very deeply dark in most of the glass, purple/red glints shine an extroverted welcome at you from the meniscus but are you ready for the massive power potentiality of Sagrantino acknowledged as Italy’s most tannic variety and, tannins aside, everything about Sagrantino is big. A lovely complex bouquet wafts invitingly from the glass, your senses are invaded with a perfumed plethora containing plums, red berries, black currants, leather, earth and spice, some dried herb drifts and a little varietal smokiness.

A powerful palate awaits you as you encounter a deep well of fruit enshrined with both red and black berries, black plums glide along the stream and a cinnamon/nutmeg/white pepper spice entanglement spikes the fruit to an elevated enjoyment factor and there is a lovely dark chocolate kiss. A little leather is evident just after the fruit/spice presentation and then there is a dark earthiness sprouting some herbs that have dried in the sun and which express a slight bitter aspect which juxtapositions in a manner that amplifies all the flavours. Sagrantino is quite an acidic variety and here the wine maker has done an excellent job as there is just the acidic drive that the other components would have requested. The tannins, even with food, are strong and drying but in no way excessive or bitter, they certainly coat your tongue with a textural cleansing. The tannin averse can come back in 10 – 15 years.

So a Sagrantino, from non GI fruit, but certainly the best Sagrantino I have encountered to date on The Granite Belt. This wine is right up there with Olivers Taranga which has long been my personal benchmark for Sagrantino in Australia. Congratulations to John Handy for his fruit/tannin management of this exceptional variety. I really would like to see separate Sagrantino’s made by Andy Williams and John Handy when the vines planted in the Rees Rd. vineyard start producing, maybe impossible but I wish.
