Ridgemill Estate 2016 Tempranillo (Take II)

A wine made with fruit harvested from the oldest Tempranillo vines on The Granite Belt. I initially reviewed this wine in November 2019.

A lustrous meniscal glow radiates red rubies slightly variegated by deep mulberry hues, the deeper aspects are consumed by black cherries which quickly become impenetrable.2016 Tempranillo

Perfumed wafts of cherry cola tease and tantalise they are touched with some orange rind and dark plum fruit fragrances, cloves provide a laced seasoning condiment redolence and the bouquet swims in sarsaparilla.

At 7 years this crianza style Tempranillo has mellowed into a smooth mouth filling wine which glides with a gentle power massaging the length of your palate with elegant enthusiasm. Black sour and savoury cherries are immediately dominant with a secondary company of black plums, the power of the fruit has gobbled up the oak which has receded to a foundational support, a small ripe mulberry presence wriggles around blueberries and later the orange rind influences the sour/savouriness with the merest hint of piquancy. The tannins which where chalky when this was a young wine have now evolved to a satin/gossamer experience. You have to be resolutely attentive to notice the minerals but they are still there quite late on the palate. The acid is still present but in deeply relegated authority. There is a little clove and something akin to cinnamon threading through the fruits power but the whole bunch influence has been mainly dispensed with by the fruit.

I obviously enjoyed this wine as I bought 5 in August 2019 and this was the last from that purchase, happily I bought another 2 in January 2020. If you have some I’m confident it will provide lovely drinking over the next 4 years or so.
