Boireann Winery 2019 The Lurnea

It seems as though the 2019 vintage conditions have created something rather magical at Boireann. While it’s true that Peter Stark would release his wines a little too early for drinking and that this one has been held back longer that could only be a little of the explanation.2019 The Lurnea All of the 2019 Boireann’s are big wines and with higher than usual alcohols, the Nebbiolo being the one exception at 13.6% a/v.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Tannat, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc. A very deep black in the glass with a red/purple meniscus, the depth of colour alone signals a big Lurnea.

The bouquet is a mix of liquorice/aniseed, spicy french oak and black pepper with powerful black berry fruit wafting up from the midst of this redolent receptacle.

On the palate and for what I have become accustomed to in a Lurnea the fruit weight is immense. There are very dark berry fruits – black berries, cassis and dark mulberries revolve in a swirling sea of black pepper, aniseed and liquorice with spicy French oak, some earthiness combined with granitic mineral flavours and a little garrigue. The acid is fresh, not biting in any way just a long controlled line running through the palate and the tannins are exceptional, fine a little chalky and of enormous persistence.

Here we have a very powerful Lurnea that will not begin to reach it’s full expression for at least 10 years and it will go on and on way beyond that. Get some if you can, it’s unlikely you’ll ever experience another Lurnea quite like this. Really the wine says so much and speaks for itself so eloquently you don’t need to read any reviews, just indulge!
