Pyramids Road 2008 Shiraz

This one from my tasting archives: A combination of new and one year old American and French oak. Interesting that the back label states .. “shows vanilla and coconut on the bouquet” because even now that’s evident, but there is lots of fruit wafting up behind, especially black berry and some black currant. Seems the fruit has gobbled up most of that oak as there’s a lovely fruit expression on the palate, once again mainly black fruits but the fruit weight is good, soft and silky smooth tannins and still enough acid to drive the wine. Beautifully balanced and lovely drinking right now but will remain in a drinking window for a few more years.

I bought a few of these from the cellar door but when tasted back in Brisbane I decided to just keep one and swap the remaining ones for more Mourvedre when I next returned to the cellar door. I can now admit that was a mistake. I’ve learned over the years that Warren does make cellaring style wines, plus 2008 was a cool year and the wines take time to develop, patience is rewarded. Now I wish I had more.
