Summit Estate 2017 Tannat

So here’s the disclaimer, “I simply love a good Tannat”. This wine is the third “Estate” Tannat I’m aware of on The Granite Belt. Fortuitously for my impassioned palate Tannat loves The Granite Belt. I’ve read many statements over the years regarding a signature variety for The Granite Belt, often Tempranillo has been suggested. Others have suggested that varietal variety is The Granite Belt signature. OK, all good observations that simply ignore “Tannat Loves The Granite Belt”. So if The Granite Belt wants to create a signature variety then plant more Tannat. OK, I’m pleased I got that out, I feel a little better .. to resume then ..

2017 TannatThis is a deeply coloured wine in both looks and action – pensive and contemplative are evoked in the experience. 2017 was a very wet red veraison on The Granite Belt with a huge rain dump, blame it on Debbie.

Black and impenetrable in the deep glass and still dark purple at the meniscus. A big and intense bouquet offers black fruits, mocha, lavender, star anise and shy pepper. Not to be outdone by the bouquet the palate offers considerable depth, complexity and balance although you just know there are greater things to come in this wines future from the interplay of structure and balance. Blackberries are prolific in this garden, they have ripened well and are already heading toward a crescendo with only a small allowance for the appearance of some blue and purple fruits but they are there and desirous of your company even if they must wait for a more engaging future conversation, some mocha oak is present, well judged in conjoined combination and there is a little lavender. Spices are peppery but somewhat subdued, almost a lush kind of spice experience. Tannins later on the palate are certainly noticeably true to the variety but there is another dimension awaiting you here as those tannins carry a slightly salty minerality with great affect upon the overall palatal experience, this finish is different and a truly lovely epilogue.
